Push Lawn Mower
The push lawn mower is the most familiar type of mower made. Before powered push mowers were invented, the push reel mower was the only type available, and powered models closely resemble their roots. Snapper, Black & Decker, and American mowers are all common brands, and favored for different reasons. Choosing the brand and model that fits your needs best requires consideration of the types available, and the requirements of the lawns you will be cutting.
Debris Discharge Options
There are three methods of debris discharge available in a push mower. Side discharge ejects the material out to the side, bagging allows you to use the debris for composting or bag for trash removal services, and the mulching method cuts the debris and redistributes it back onto the lawn as it goes. Many push mowers offer all three options, but some do not. Make sure that you are getting the right mower for your particular needs, and compare how these methods differ from one brand to another.
Self Propelled Mowers
While it is not technically a lawn push mower, a self propelled mower looks like one, and still requires your involvement for controlling the cut. The mowers can be front or rear wheel drive, and may be able to cut a lawn at speeds up to 6 miles an hour. If you want to have a well manicured lawn but don't want to spend the whole weekend to do it, this type of mower may be a better choice than one you walk behind and push.
Electric or Gas
The two main types of hand push lawn mower are gas and electric models. Gas engines deliver more power and faster cutting speeds, but electric mowers are quiet, and create no direct emissions. For homes equipped with solar power generating equipment, an electric mower can be a totally emission free device and provide you with fodder for your compost heap in the bargain.
Push Reel Mowers
The original lawn mower was a reel push lawn mower, and many people still prefer to use them for many reasons. Reel mowers distribute the debris directly back on the lawn, for one thing, and that means instant lawn fertilization. In a world where people are not getting enough oppotunity for exercise, a reel mower also offers a complete body workout with steady, self-set exertion limits and the knowledge that you are helping the environment at the same time as you are keeping fit and trim.
